About Our Cause: Feeding Hungry Mouths

The San Francisco Food Bank does as much as they can to alleviate hunger and provide nutritious meals to homebound elderly and low income families. They are also prepared to provide relief in the event of a disaster.

Also check out this Huffington Post article, which indicates that "..the number of seniors living alone who seek help from food pantries in the U.S. increased 81 percent to 408,000 in 2008, compared to 225,000 in 2006, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Overall, 4.7 million households used American food pantries in 2008, compared to about 3.7 million in 2006. Do the math - that's an increase of 1 million households!

The New York Times also reports that food stamp use continues to rise to all-time highs. "While use is greatest where poverty runs deep, the growth has been especially swift in once-prosperous places hit by the housing bust. There are about 50 small counties and a dozen sizable ones where the rolls have doubled in the last two years."
